Witch of the Waste by Rozefire Witch of the Waste by Rozefire
Another bit of Howl's Moving Castle fanart.

This is obviously the book version of the witch. Miyazaki's version being old, obese and voiced by a man. And Howl was supposed to have jilted her?!

Anyway, I liked book!Witch. She had the right idea about finding Mr. Right (by chopping up bits of Misters Almost Right! :D). She was deliciously evil, had a great sense of style, changed her face more often than she changed her socks and was perhaps the true victim of the story. We'll never know. Nor frankly, shall we ever care. Feel a bit sorry for her though.

FULL VIEW, my little monkeys. Full view.

Exactly how I imagined her!

Yes, I was greatly offended when I watched the movie and saw the Witch for the first time. But then, having read the book beforehand, I just didn't like the movie at all.

Love it! You really gave her character!
Sun-Chips Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2010
I love this- it's beautiful, and a flawless representation of the real Witch.

However, I'd love to throw out that in that shitty excuse for a movie, the Witch of the Waste is voiced by Lauren Bacall.
Who is most definitely a lady.

I love how you've drawn her hair and clothes. Very fairytale-ish (is that even a style?).
'Chopping bits off Misters Almost Right' Ha ha! That's perfect! If only I was a witch!

I still cannot forgive her cursing Sophie. But otherwise you´re right, she had good ideas ;)
And this is a really sweet piece of work :)

Hooray for a good looking Witch of the Waste! ^_^ I finally saw the movie after my friends kept telling me how good it was and I just burst out, "What the heck is that?" They didn't understand why I was so confused.
She looks gorgeous, in an evil sort of way. :3

I loved the book! and this character was so much better in the novel than in Miyazaki's version :)

I am most inclinded to agree with you. And Jones is an absolutely wonderful writer.

i love your ideas on the witch of the waste :D

yes, the movie was...weird for me :P to say the least that is.

i never really thought of her being victimized by her demon, (too caught up with Howl ) but come to think of it, and her chopped up mr Almost Rights, it does make her more interesting.

haylabu dianna wynne jones :3

and your interpretation of her both in your art and in teh description is absolutely lovely :D

great work :D

I loved the books. I thought Miyazaki left out a lot of good parts.

I love it!!! that IS what the witch looks like.

I watched the movie first, and throughout the book I was picturing said obese, old and voiced-by-a-man Witch of the Waste... It really spoiled it :(

^_^ I liked the book story more than the film,
although I did love the film too, I wish they'd make
a live version of the original, with the original witch

very nicely done ^_^

Best book EVER. :)The book is my favorite, but the movie is still awesome even though it is an entirely different plot. I love the witch's hair and she sort of looks Shakespearean. The poor girl just wanted a husband! :( I would have gone for Howl as well. :D
MaddieSue Featured By Owner Aug 8, 2008
I ate this book alive.

And the movie was quite pretty in its own respects, but this is goreous. Much more the way I pictured her when reading,

OMG I'm a huge fan of Howl's Moving Castle too~!!!
Totally agree with you on the witch. I think she was the one being exploited (especially by Howl and her fire demon), and even though she is the antagonist of the story, there is something about her that is quite sad. I think you brought that out really well in this illustration. Especially loved how you did her hair.

 Yeah. I've already reviewed. Awhile back. I just finished reading the book I got it last month(it's hard to read when you got my job) I have to agree. I can see why Howl was taken by her. I seriously can't see Howl wanting the fat version...She had so many double...No they were quad chins...That you could lose your car keys in there. D= That's not very hawt. The book is way better than the movie. Although the movie is good. I prefer the book. It explains more, and has more characters. ^^; Once again great fuckin' job! You truely captured the essences of The Witch of the Waste's beauty. *nod-nods*

Yeah I can imagine the witch in some really awesome outfits. Why wouldn't he jilt her in the movie? She is hideous. Anyway, good work!

Hmm...I saw the movie and have yet to read the book, I wondered why she was so much older than very, very much older. I don't think I am going to find out, any who I like this drawing of her and makes me want to read the story more.
This along with a friend being upset about Sophie behaving so timidly. I didn't get that either...but it's so pretty! *wah*

great artwork, somewhy she looks tragic (am I thinking on hamlet again?) but I think I liked the artist comment more, you have quite rightly analized her motivations

Great artwork! I'm glad someone finally decided to pay attention to the book version not just the movie.
LilithNightwalker Featured By Owner Nov 12, 2006

Although the movie is quite good for squishy-fun Howl-ness... :D But the book is WAAAAY better overall.

But even in the book I kind of had this idea of the Witch being a bit older... maybe in her mid-thirties-ish. This is still amazing, though. :+fav:

poorolivia Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2006
i came across this....i don't remember how, but i've never commented on a piece before and i had to on this because i LOVE that book. i was a little disappointed with miyazaki's movie but i think it's okay on its own. (oh the witch in the movie is voiced by lauren bacall, though she does sound a little rough and gruff, and mannish).

Yes... she reminded me a bit of one of the Ozian witches... I do not recall which book it was in (one of the more obscure ones I am sure) but there was an evil witch with a thousand different faces. I recall that the protagonist wondered into her evil fortress/hidey hole and found them all lined up on satin lined shelves... I believe that they may have been able to talk and open their eyes. It was quite a frightening and chilling scene, as I recall.
Rozefire Featured By Owner Aug 8, 2006  Student Digital Artist
I remember seeing that film. Scared the spit out of me that scene. XD
Sasky Featured By Owner Aug 8, 2006  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Yeah, it was pretty creepy but creepy in a very unique way. I mean, when one thinks "scary" it's generally ghosts and hairy/slimy things with long arms etc. that come to mind, not... a bunch of faces lying around. But god, can a bunch of disembodied faces be terrifying.

"Ooh, pretty woman... wait... afuoihgsguohwitchofthewaste *click* witchwitchwitch *clickclick*"

xDDD Now THAT'S what she should look like. Damn Miyazaki. >>;; And I do agree, she had a good idea... in theory... Hm... xD

Anywho. Awesome work. I love the tones you chose. Really cool feeling. Her nose bothers me a bit, but I realize that that's probably style, blah blah blah. xD So awesome work anyway. :+fav:

I still haven't seen this movie! They didn't play it anywhere close to me unfortunately. But the book intreagues this a manga book or a regular book?

This peice was incredible by the way. I love the way you make her seem whispy and very attractive.
Jezunya Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2005
Nice ^_^ I love the way her hands look...

She kinda reminds me of Baba Yaga, the villain in Enchantment by Orson Scott Card (really great book - kind of a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story, in ancient Russia! Very, very cool story ;))
